Abstract

The article presents the results of a study of Symon Petliura's vision of the tasks of military literature during the Ukrainian Revolution. The starting point of the study was the views of writers, literary critics, and politicians on the problem of the development of literature during the war, and dedicated to the events of the war, literature by and for the combatants. The author emphasizes the role of Symon Petliura as a cultural figure, educator, organizer of cultural diplomacy of the Ukrainian People's Republic, and author of many substantial journalistic works. The main attention is paid to the doctrine of Ukrainian military literature, which is presented in the articles “Considerations on the Tasks of the Ukrainian Theater” and “Further Problems of Military Construction in Ukrainian Military Literature.” It is found that, when creating this doctrine, S. Petliura proceeded from the analysis of the fundamental issues of the relationship between the state and the army in the context of their importance for the liberation struggle. The author notes the confidence of the Head of the Directorate in the need to instill in citizens the idea of the army's non-party, the inviolability of the state's priority.
The author emphasizes the special role of military writers' work during the formation of the nation and the struggle for independence, when, according to S. Petliura, the task of writers is not only to inform, but also to create a special atmosphere of wariness in order to be able to properly prepare for confrontation with the aggressor. The article emphasizes the importance of methodological, educational, and upbringing work of writers, which should be aimed at popularizing military knowledge, including by introducing a minimum of military science disciplines into educational programs. This will help to foster courage, perseverance, bravery, a sense of national honor, and self-respect in young people. On the other hand, the author notes the excessive romanticization of war as the most creative factor in the life of nations, which is recorded in the works of S. Petliura.
The author emphasizes the need for further study of the diverse heritage of Symon Petliura in order to use certain ideas that can be fruitful in the context of the current Russian-Ukrainian war.
